During our travels in Brazil last year, we were amazed by the quality and variety of coffees produced in the country. The sad reality is that many only associated Brazilian coffees with low quality blends, however this is truly not the case. We are excited to bring to you one of the most interesting coffees we have tasted that is coming out of Brazil.
In Brazil’s Campo das Vertentes region, Gabriel Lamounier of Fazenda Guariroba has embraced science and fermentation as tools to elevate both quality and consistency.
Widely recognized for his expertise in fermentation, Gabriel has earned numerous accolades, including winning the Cup of Excellence in 2016 and placing among Brazil’s top coffees in several subsequent competitions. Today, Fazenda Guariroba cultivates more than ten varieties adapted to its terroir, producing coffees known for their complexity, clarity, and long-lasting finish.
“Fermentation is one tool for creating complexity - it’s not the only one,” Gabriel explains. “From variety selection and drying to farm management, every step is essential to producing something truly special.”
Gabriel and his wife, Eliza, balanced careers in dentistry with coffee production for more than two decades. After winning the Cup of Excellence in 2016 and gaining international recognition, they decided to leave dentistry behind and dedicate themselves fully to the farm - a decision that has helped establish Fazenda Guariroba as one of Brazil’s most respected specialty coffee producers.
