Our Sourcing Approach
Sourcing is something that lies at the heart of what we do at Swerl and how we buy our coffee is a process we put a lot of thought and care into. Not just regarding the quality and flavour of the coffees, but how they travel through the supply chain from farmers all the way to us in small town Sweden.
We want to know that the money we pay is getting back to the amazing producers who grow our coffees, and that those crucial to this supply chain are getting their fair share. Now this may all sound a bit too serious but we love coffee and we value the people who push the industry forward, that’s why we feel greater profit sharing for producers only betters coffee as a whole.
Traceability, fair trade and ethically sourced have become buzz words in the industry this past decade but if we had to sum up Swerl into two words it’s likely seasonality and relationships. Seasonality in that we hope to showcase the diversity of terroir that coffee has. Different countries harvest at different times, giving all their chance to display what each origin has to offer. We source and release coffees to coincide with when they will first be available to market. Giving an annual cycle to the coffees we release.
We ideally buy our coffee from people we know and have relationships with, relationships we hope to foster long term. Both with producers and our logistical and distribution partners. While it might not always be perfect, we are trying to source coffee as honestly as we can. Each year and season hoping to improve our practices and work with those who share our values.
Trust is key knowing the companies we work with are giving producers what's earned but also acknowledging their needs and struggles. As our importers grow, we see greater purchases and a wider distribution network for producers. Hoping every success we have sees a trickle down to those who deserve it.
We are committed to the people we source coffee from, aiming for trust and long term friendships. Grateful for all the work everyone does, from our direct trade partners in Brazil the Barreto family, the amazing work of the importer Semilla helping to build producer-run collectives at origin, to single producers like Jhon Jairo in Colombia dedicated to quality, community and consistency. Every coffee and every producer has a story which we hope to tell out of appreciation for their efforts and dedication.
