This coffee from Gichugu in central Kenya is a blend of SL28 and SL34 varieties grown by over 1500 small farmers who are all part of the Thirikwa Farmers Cooperative Society. On the southern slope of beautiful Mount Kenya, these farmers have an average of about 200 - 250 coffee trees each at an altitude closer to 2000 meters above sea level. During the harvest, the farmers selectively select the most ripe, reddest coffee berries to deliver these the same day to the common washing station, Gakuyuini, which is located 1600 m above sea level. Once at the washing station, the coffee berries are sorted by hand and the pulp is separated from the beans by the berries of the highest quality. The green beans are then fermented between 12 - 16 hours and then washed in clean, fresh river water to remove any remaining traces of pulp before passing through sorting channels for drying on raised beds. When it reaches optimal moisture content, they are transported for sizing before being taken to the warehouse for storage and distribution.
