May - Coffee roasters of the month Part 1 : HAYB, Warsaw

Posted by Daniel Lars Jonas Carlsson on

The second roaster in May's Coffee-Box is none other than HAYB Specialty Coffee from Warsaw, Poland. This family-run roastery is run by Wiktor Borowski and his dad. With a young and passionate team by their side, they choose and roast coffee with the highest precision in a playful way.  We've blindly cuped all of their 10 coffees that we got as samples and we can honestly say it was a tough decision because they were all just so good. The quality is nothing that surprises us because HAYB focuses 110% on just it. Wiktor Borowski explains that they place high emphasis on the fact that there is a great deal of care for quality at every step of the production chain....

May - Coffee roasters of the month Part 1 : Nomad Coffee Roasters

Posted by Daniel Lars Jonas Carlsson on

Legendary Nomad Coffee Roasters from Barcelona started with a simple little coffee-cart on the streets of London in 2011. Jordi Mestre born and raised in Barcelona, moved to London after he graduated as a designer in Elisava. Well in London, his plans changed when he discovered a world of specialty coffee that he couldn't resist. For two years, Jordi managed to get experience from the very best coffee shops in London, which gave him the courage and economy to put together a small coffee-cart that he named Nomad. He rolled into London's most legendary markets on the weekends to serve the people coffee that he rotated from the finest rosteries of London. Nomad's signature then was the same as it...

April - Coffee Roasters of the Month Part 2: KAWA

Posted by Daniel Lars Jonas Carlsson on

KAWA - which was used in ancient times as a name for the beverage 'coffee', and it was just that that Alexis Gagnaire thought when he started his roastery two years ago, a name that had a strong recognition factor and was easy to remember. However, we do not think that is the whole truth behind why KAWA from Paris has made a breakthrough so quickly and strongly in the market and is now among the foremost in Europe in specialty coffee. More speaks for their well-selected beans from exciting countries with experimental processing methods, which in turn represents them in an exceptionally good way with a careful roasting to bring out the most beautiful flavors.   For three years,...

April - Coffee Roasters of the Month Part 1: Bonanza

Posted by Daniel Lars Jonas Carlsson on

Bonanza: a situation that creates a sudden increase in happiness. The sentence matches the roastery incredibly well, as it is exactly the feeling we get at the first sip of the coffee that we drink from Bonanza Coffee Roasters, Berlin. But to explain how Bonanza is what they are today, it requires us to go way back in time, all the way back to 2006 when specialty coffee was a more or less unknown expression in Europe. A visit to a café in London was the start of the big change for Berlin and Germany's coffee culture. The then artist, Yumi Choi, experienced coffee for the first time as it should taste and she has explained the experience as having previously...

March - Coffee Roasters of the Month Part 2: Friedhats

Posted by Daniel Lars Jonas Carlsson on

Oh yes! Introducing Friedhats feels a bit like presenting a rebellious indie rock band. Friedhats does not only have an attitude but also symbolizes a playful and relaxed lifestyle. In an unpretentious way, they deliver a real high-end product, a bit like a good rock band in the genre of coffee. Behind Friedhats are two nice guys, who run their roastery with a coffee bar from an alley in Amsterdam. Lex and Dylan met at Headfirst (which was Lex's first café to close again in 2015, when it was no longer allowed to roast coffee in their premises). Lex and Dylan decided not long after that to start up a new roastery together in an old dilapidated garage in west...

What coffee are we drinking from Rum Baba in February's coffee-box?

Posted by Daniel Lars Jonas Carlsson on

As you've all understood, we are completely in love with the coffee we're going to present to the Rum Baba in February's coffee-box! This has been written to us by Jeroen about these two coffees. It's all English, but it's a hundred percent cozy reading.   Ethiopia Worka - Espresso From the region around Gedeb in Yirgacheffe. This coffee is processed by the Worka washing station. Farmers from around the area deliver their crop (cherries) to the washing station. These farmers pick so called local heirloom varities from their gardens (average farm is smaller than 1 hectar), this results in a mix of all different varietals within the one Lot we buy. When farmers arrive with their cherries, the Worka...

This may seem like a big statement and, in a way, it is. But why is this so important to us?
